Project Description

The building at Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 225 in Amsterdam has been renovated and transformed into a sustainable retail and office space

Renovation and Interior Design

This project involves the complete transformation and renovation of the former Kasbank and Telegraaf building, with the ground floor and mezzanine designated for retail and the upper floors designed as high-quality office spaces. A new connection has been created between Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal and Kalverstraat, giving the building a central role as a shopping destination. Part of the building is a national monument, located in an urban area. Furthermore, a parking garage and bicycle storage have been established on levels -1 and -2.

Some notable additions to the monumental building are:

  • A detailed entrance with a revolving, circular glass elevator
  • A unique entrance plaza on the first floor, located in a corner of the building, featuring a small cinema and a staff lounge
  • A new rooftop level that offers views over the city center of Amsterdam
Enhancement of sustainability

The façades have been thoroughly re-insulated, providing better protection against heat loss. Additionally, an advanced geothermal energy storage system (WKO) has been installed to optimize energy consumption. The windows have been replaced with high-quality insulating glass and fitted with solar-controlled shading, enhancing both comfort and energy efficiency. Nesting boxes have been placed on the upper parts of the façades to promote biodiversity, and the surrounding alleys have been transformed into green, inviting spaces. With these sustainable measures, the building has achieved a BREEAM Excellent certification.
