Project Description
The building located at the Oude Vlijmenseweg 200 in 's-Hertogenbosch has been developed as a new work and development environment for the municipality of 's-Hertogenbosch, Weener XL. With this new building, the more than 17,000 residents who are welcomed annually can be assisted and guided in a pleasant environment. Weener XL is dedicated to creating opportunities for vulnerable individuals, including people with disabilities, the long-term unemployed, or those facing other barriers in the labor market.
Construction and Interior Design
Weener XL has been developed into an inspiring and healthy work location, designed with a focus on flexibility and functionality. The building offers a diverse mix of workspaces, including flexible and fixed work areas, outdoor spaces, reception areas, meeting rooms, gathering spaces, and production areas. With its versatile layout and combination possibilities, the building has a dynamic character and can adapt to various usage needs.
The design is based on the concept of a pavilion, which is open and spacious. This ensures that the activities within the building are visible, creating an inviting and welcoming atmosphere.
Weener XL utilizes timber construction in a sector that has traditionally focused on steel construction, particularly for industrial halls and business buildings. This category is frequently developed in the Netherlands and can make a significant contribution to the timber construction revolution. By employing a simple modular construction and the principle of 'rough construction is finished construction,' the design focuses on the essentials. This enables competition with conventional forms of industrial building while retaining the benefits of sustainability and aesthetics.
Enhancement of sustainability
It is one of the most sustainable buildings in 's-Hertogenbosch, located on the old Michel site. The building is energy-neutral and free from natural gas. 'No waste, no downtime' is the guiding principle. Construction has been carried out using circular raw materials and resources as much as possible. Solar panels and heat pumps meet the energy needs, and a large part of the roof is planted with sedum. The building has an area of approximately 14,000 m2 , is constructed in separate elements. This makes it modular and easily reusable.
Reusable bio-based materials have been used, which can either be absorbed by nature or easily reused. As a result, the building has also achieved a CO2 storage capacity of at least 1,150 tons through the choice of a construction system featuring wooden columns, wooden beams, wooden façade elements with flax insulation, and wooden channel floor slabs. The wooden structure, designed as a modular skeleton with a base dimension of 7.5 x 7.5 meters, has created a flexible building that accommodates all departments and components of the services provided.
Nomination for the National Timber Construction Award 2023
The new construction of Weener XL has been nominated for the National Timber Construction Award 2023 from Houtblad in the category 'Commercial Timber Construction.
